The SNESdev Game Jam happened between June 5 and September 10, 2021, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Super NES. The goal was to create a SNES game from scratch in just three months using publicly available resources. The rule was that it had to be playable on real hardware! In the end, there were four entries.

The first of the games I tried out from the SNESdev Game Jam is Dottie Dreads Nought, by Goldlocke. This is an action platformer where you play as Dottie who can utilize a drill attack. The drill attack is really neat, and allows you to plow through enemies and obstacles. It is perhaps most comparable to Sparkster. A nice job is the owl, Ernesto, that follows you around, which will open up secrets in a few spots. The game is quite polished in its current state, with excellent graphics and music that sounds straight from the mid-90s. Perhaps the only downside is that the enemies respawn very quickly, sometimes when you are standing right on the spawn point. Overall, this is a great homebrew that is more impressive than the majority of commercially released SNES games, and worthy of a playthrough.
