Dragon Quest V is the fifth entry in the original Japanese RPG series, and first of two on the SFC. This game shows its age with graphics that are only marginally better than Dragon Quest IV, and very slow movement. However, it has one of the best storylines of any RPG, branching three generations with the main character as a child and and adult. The recruitment of monsters was introduced in this game, something that was later utilized in Pokemon.
As for fan translations, the Dejap / Partial Translations version is excellent quality, and uses Dragon Warrior terms whenever possible. I haven't tried Byuu's translation, but it is also pretty much complete (and more literal). Or better yet, try the DS version, which improves on the SFC version in almost every respect.
