Street Racer

title

This is an early prototype of Street Racer

This prototype is part of a collection of loose EPROMs recovered by the Video Game History Foundation on behalf of an anonymous collector. This lot contained prototypes from various systems including Game Boy, Mega Drive/Genesis, SNES, Game Gear, 32X, NES, Turbo-Grafx 16, Atari XE and Master System. The prototypes for other systems will be released on other sites, such as Hidden Palace and SMS Power.

Street Racer was undoubtedly a big rip-off of Super Mario Kart, with characters that definitely would not past muster in 2021. This prototype shows the game in a pretty early state. Several options are missing, and the there is no sound. I'm not super familiar with this game, so I am showing just a few things that I noticed.

Prototype: Missing the "soccer/rumble speed" option. Also note the extra "S" in the top right.Final

In the initial menu screen, to advance in the prototype you must press "B", while in the final version it is "start".

Prototype: Extra option - playback.Final

Prototype: If you select the playback option, you get this menu, but the game freezes if you select anything.

Prototype: All of the racers have different stats, but notably the character "Surf" has a completely different portrait.Final

In general, the courses in the prototype appear incomplete, and the boundaries are not necessarily solid. The course maps are also not visible. The gameplay is there, but in the championship mode, the AI plays too perfectly and it is nearly impossible to win the first race. Obviously, the courses that come up are also very different.

Prototype: "Give up" menu is differentFinal

The practice menu is quite different, and lacks the character portrait that is in the final version. Many of the labeled tracks are missing, and the ones that do come up point to different tracks than the final version.

The Suzulu 1 track, for instance.

The Rumble mode is definitely under-developed in the prototype. The prototype version lacks destructible boundaries, for instance.

The soccer mode lacks the ability to score, and the AI doesn't really do anything in the prototype. Also notable is that the timer runs too slow in the prototype. The "indoor" court is the only course available, even though the options show different options.
