This prototype is part of a collection of loose EPROMs recovered by the Video Game History Foundation on behalf of an anonymous collector. This lot contained prototypes from various systems including Game Boy, Mega Drive/Genesis, SNES, Game Gear, 32X, NES, Turbo-Grafx 16, Atari XE and Master System. The prototypes for other systems will be released on other sites, such as Hidden Palace and SMS Power. This prototype shows the game in a relatively early state. The music is quite different from the final game, and while the gameplay is pretty much finished, many aspects of the enemies are not. Another notable thing is that the prototype does not have an intro sequence or title screen - it just starts right from the opening stage. There is a lot of clipping in the prototype, and you can easily pass into other levels by going through walls. Later levels do not show the same level of completeness as the final version as the earlier levels. The most frustrating part of this game is that the power and length of your main lightning attack diminishes as your health goes down, making it very difficult if you get hit. In this prototype, that does not happen, which shows that this concept was added late in development. In the opening scene, Morticia does not appear in the prototype. The health meter and item displays on the HUD are swapped in the prototype. The prototype gives you more health at the start. In the prototype, if you lose all your health, you do not die.
This gatekeeper thing appears on the main overworld in the prototype, but in the first room of the first cave in the final version.
In the prototype, Gomez gives you a Diary. In the final, it is a Journal.
The level layouts have changed, and therefore the map has also changed.
Even the objects in the parts that are similar have changes. For instance, the first screen in the second cave adds a barrier in the middle. Note that these enemies take a lot more hits in the prototype. Enemies in general always drop health powerups in the prototype.
I don't have the time to delve into this prototype the way I wanted due to the large backlog, but I hope some Addams Family Values fan will want to deep dive into this unique build! |
