Might & Magic II: Gate To Another World / Might and Magic: Book Two

title

This is a prototype of the unreleased US version of Might & Magic II

This prototype is part of a collection of loose EPROMs recovered by the Video Game History Foundation on behalf of an anonymous collector. This lot contained prototypes from various systems including Game Boy, Mega Drive/Genesis, SNES, Game Gear, 32X, NES, Turbo-Grafx 16, Atari XE and Master System. The prototypes for other systems will be released on other sites, such as Hidden Palace and SMS Power.

This game was unreleased in the US, and was supposed to be published by American Sammy. It did come out in Europe, published by Elite. For more information on the unreleased aspect of this game, please refer to the page for the other prototype that was released in 2018.

This prototype is fairly close to final, but it is clearly an earlier build than the previously released US prototype. I checked the main game text from the binary (which is ASCII and could easily be extracted). There was a single typo which was fixed in the later build (and the European version). Since I have never really played this game, I do not know exactly where it is, but it relates to taking water from a fountain.

Earlier Prototype:

A blue-watered fountain beckons to you. Drink from it's waters?

Later Prototype:

A blue-watered fountain beckons to you. Drink from its waters?

Some aspects of the default characters are also different from the later prototype. Notably, the character Cassandra does not have the "cartographer" skill by default, so you do not have the ability to start auto-mapping at the start of the game. Also note that the character does not have their club equipped, and does not start with 200 gold.
