The second SNES release to come from Koei’s long-running Nobunaga series. Players once again assume the roles of daimyo as they battle to unite Japan in the feudal era. Lord of Darkness is something of an improvement on its predecessor in most departments, though a vast amount of dry micromanagement is vital to success. And while the gameplay is still riding on Romance of the Three Kingdom’s coattails, the attention to detail and the new command options help set it apart from most other 16-bit Koei releases. - J.D.
