Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Fighting Edition

Were you ever curious what it's like to control one of the huge zords in Power Rangers? Or controlling one of the bad guys? This is your chance. In an attempt to copy Capcom's Street Fighter series, Bandai manages to bring home the uniqueness of fighting with Zords. Graphics: 7.5/10

This is just like a mech-fighting game. The hand-drawn animation is very well animated. The details on the zords are outstanding. It is easy to see that Bandai put in a lot of effort in to this game to make Power Rangers fans happy. Everything from the zords all the way to Lord Zed is very well done indeed. The backgrounds are colorful too with a false sense of depth. The only complaint here is that although the animation is exquisitely done, but still certain moves on certain characters have noticable amount of missing animations. The background is too static too.

Sound: 7/10

Fans should immediatley recognize the soundtrack on this game. The tunes are faithfully reproduced on this cart with a marked-down quality. The sound effects are clean with zords landing, lasers firing, as well as sword swinging.

Play Control / Gameplay: 7.5/10

Well, Bandai did a very good job of copying the fighting system from SF series. But they also added a feature of their own. They included a special meter that when it's charged up, you can release special attacks. The only way for this meter to build up is by being aggressive. Williams later took that idea and came out with the "Aggression Meter". But that's in another game. In here, the aggressiveness of the way you fight could very well be your winning ticket. At times you can unlease a stream of unblockable attacks that cause massive damage. The enemy has a chance to avoid it because during the brief moment of your energy-gathering, you're vulnerable to his retaliation.

Overall Score: 8/10

At first glance, this game could've been passed off as another opportunistic company trying to rake off as much cash off of fans as possible. But if you really give this game a chance, you could come to appreciate the graphics, the sound, basically the overall quircky atmosphere of "Power Rangers". This is a very enjoyable fighting game minus the SF or MK licensing.
