Andre Agassi Tennis

title

At the time of its release, Agassi still had the long hair style. He was still the "bad boy" of tennis on the top of his game. The name "Agassi" was one hot license. In this game by TecMagik, everything about Tennis was done right - everything including the boring parts.

Graphics: 6.5/10

The graphics, although a step up from Super Tennis, was not enough to be called "top notch". The tennis court is well presented, the net is properly animated, the players are clearly represented, but something's missing. The subtle details on a real tennis court is not present. Although each part of the graphics is fine by itself, but when all of them are combined, they just simply do not gel together to become a convincing tennis scene. The player animation is fine with each overhead smash and the like. The players, however, look extremely similar to one another. They all don't have recognizable features. In addition to Agassi, there isn't any more real life players present in the game. So only Agassi looks different from other players with his long hair. The rest are merely the same two sprite-based characters with different colors.

Sound: 6/10

TecMagik sure did capture the sounds of tennis alright. The sound of the racket smashing the ball is nice, and so's the sound of ball hitting the ground. Announcer is accurate with the match scores and announces finely. But this game lacks color commentary and crowd noise. Of course, given to the fact that this is a tennis game, the lack of frequent crowd noise is understandable. It's not as if you are playing in front of hundreds of thousands of South African soccer fans. The lack of commentary, however, hurt the sound aspect extremely. It is boring enough to hear the announcer saying the same things over and over again (Love, fifteen. Love, thirty. etc.), TecMagik should've done something to improve the aural experiences of the players. The musics are short and far in between, as well as lacking in variety.

Play Control / Gameplay: 7/10

As always with the Super Nintendo, a game may have sub-par graphics as well as sub-par sound, but gameplay is something that can not be taken away from it. This game is one such classic case. The graphics are not good and neither is the sound, but the gameplay captures the essence of tennis. Granted, this game does not have the other big names in tennis, but the fantasy cups will be fine. At your disposal will be several different moves such as fore-hand, back-hand, overhead smash, and more. The gameplay is this game's saving grace.

Overall Score: 6.5/10

When this game came out, it was the best tennis game on the SNES. Of course, tennis games nowadays on the Gameboy Color and Nintendo 64 are juiced up with extra arcade playability. However, keep in mind that this is a game simulating tennis instead of exaggerating/glorifying it. TecMagik set out to do things right with tennis, and although they failed at the visual/audio departments of the game, the gameplay is a perfect hit. If you are a tennis fan then this is a must-have game for you. For other casual gamers like me, you can always use a good natural sleep aide. ;)
